Great Winter Destinations

There are a lot of places in the world that are great to visit when the weather is warm. This is also true for when the weather is cold. There are plenty of places that make for a great place to go during the winter. There is a distinct charm during the winter that makes being in a foreign place something incredible. Here are a few winter destinations that you can put on your list.

New York

The big apple is not only good for lights, noise, and non stop action. During the winter the entire city gets into the festive mood. Two major things you can see are the tree at Rockefeller Center and the Rocketts performance. Both of these attractions are all about the holidays. The windows at Macy’s are also all done up for the occasion. On the more active side of things you can go ice skating at a number of locations from Rockefeller Center to Bryant and Central Park.

Lapland Finland

northern lights

It would be difficult to find a better winter wonderland than that of Finnish Lapland. This town is home to Santa Claus Village and Santa Clause Park. Both of these locations offer tours of Santa’s different workshops and even have the chance to talk to the man himself. Santa trips are always a good time but there is tons more to do in Lapland during the winter. You can snowboard, ski, snowmobile, and see the northern lights. As far as winter goes, lapland gets it right.

Amsterdam

Winter is a nice addition in Amsterdam. The city gets covered in white lights which is always adds charm to a place. When the weather gets cold enough and the canal freezes over and you can go ice skating on it. This seems to be a big party and sounds like an awesome time. One of the best parts about winter in Amsterdam is the warm bars and cafes. There is nothing like enjoying the cold and then going to warm yourself up with some great people and some nice drinks.

London

Another great city during the winter is London. There is always tons to see in London. The attractions only get added on during the winter. The city puts on a great winter themed carnival. They have everything here from penguin themed rides and a ferris wheel to a giant carousel with a bar in the middle. If that isn’t a good time then I don’t know what is. One of the best perks about the ferris wheel is that it can give you a great view of the city, a similar view as the London Eye, except its less than half the price!

The Top Five Things To Do in Montreal

Montreal is the largest city in the French-speaking province of Quebec. It’s also the second largest city in Canada. With such attributes, the city is sure to offer the majority of its visitors with something to do. While many visitors are put off by the idea of “needing” to speak French, this simply isn’t the case. The majority of those residing in Montreal are well-versed in English and those working in customer-facing roles tend to be bilingual (although may greet visitors in French until instructed otherwise). So, what are the five best things while travelling in Montreal? Let’s take a look at what Montreal has to offer.

montreal

  1. Parc du Mont-Royal

No visit to Montreal would be complete without a visit to its parkland namesake. This park contains a 761 foot hill, which is where Montreal derives its name from. It is the largest of the city’s parks and is conveniently located in the downtown sector. Visitors can access it from the green and orange line metro stations (Peel and Mount Royal respectively). Visitors to the park also have access to various amenities that offer cityscape views, such as the Chalet du Mont-Royal.

  1. La Ronde Amusement Park

Located just outside of Montreal on Saint Helen’s Island, it is the largest theme park in Quebec and provides a suitable family outing for most age groups. It offers a variety of thrill rides from roller coasters through to infant-friendly rides including the carousel. New attractions are regularly added to the park so as to encourage repeat visits, but visitors are advised to leave a bit of time in between visits to ensure that these attractions come to fruition and are operational. La Ronde is also home to l’International des Feux d’Artifice. This is a bi-weekly summertime event where representatives from different countries of the world compete against one another in a fireworks competition; putting on grand displays for visitors.

  1. Jean Talon Market

Canada is home to many open air markets and Montreal is no different. The Jean Talon Market is located on Saint Laurent Boulevard and can be accessed from the De Castelnau metro station. It primarily caters to local and ethnic cuisine from European sausage, local cheese, and a variety of international spices and handmade delicacies.

  1. Montreal Botanical Gardens

A rarity in Canada, the Montreal Botanical Gardens is open year-round for visitors between 9 AM and 5 PM (6 PM on peak summertime days). Entry to the gardens includes access to 10 greenhouses that each carry a certain theme, which present over 26,000 species of plant life to the general public. It’s also typically a destination for schoolchildren on class trips with its outdoor display, which includes a spread of poisonous plants. It is located just north of the downtown core and can be accessed from the Pie-IX metro station.

  1. Montreal Poker Tournament

Montreal is home to the $1 Million CAD guaranteed poker tournament, which is known as the Montreal Festival Main Event hosted by Full Tilt Poker. Players earn their way into this tournament by participating in freeroll competitions on the Full Tilt Poker service; then the top 50 players in each freeroll become eligible to travel to Montreal in order to play in this tournament.

The tournament is played across a weekend in September with the first day being dedicated to qualification rounds. The most successful players in these rounds take their best chip stack through to the main event weekend; then battle it out around the felt to determine the overall winner.

Ideas for a girls’ night out in style

Good friendships make you healthier, so if you can’t even remember when you last gathered your best girl mates together and enjoyed a night out, now’s the time to get planning a fun outing.

Screen Shot 2013-07-30 at 10.57.38 PM

And if you and the girls are fans of online bingo, you never know when one of you might hit the jackpot. If you do manage to win, then why not treat your buddies to something to remember and plan a stylish evening out? Here are some ideas for ladies night with a difference.

Meet a mixologist

Fancy becoming a master mixologist and showing off your cocktail making skills? Then why not book yourself and your buddies onto course where you’ll be taught how to make classics as well as look like a pro with a shaker.

Many bars can offer mixology sessions where you and your mates can try your hand at making your own cocktails so you can get your night out off with bang.

Get a limo

You and the girls certainly look the part in your new outfits and sky high shoes, so why not travel in style too? Rather than getting a taxi or braving public transport in teetering heels, employ the services of a private limo company and turn heads as your chauffeur drives you to your dinner or bar reservation. Celebrate your bingo win at the same time, while sipping on champagne and stretching out in the back of your luxury vehicle.

Wine tasting

Have a drink or two of posh plonk and learn about noses and legs – in the wine world – at the same time at a tasting event. Check local wineries, restaurants and bars to see what they have coming up and after, head to a restaurant and have fun remembering what you’ve learnt as you choose a bottle to go with your food.

A slap up meal

It’s not every day you win a jackpot on an online bingo game, so why not treat yourself and your best mates to a posh meal in that restaurant that you’ve always wanted to go to. A word of warning though – if you plan to go dancing after, it’s maybe not a good idea to overdo the food. Instead, try a restaurant with a tasting menu or perhaps a Spanish or Middle Eastern restaurant which offers smaller sharing plates.

Get musical

How about combining your girls’ night out with a concert? Check listings magazines for stars that are coming to your town and if there’s nobody you fancy, try your luck at an open mic night. It’s a great way to learn about the music offering in your local area and for those ladies who are tempted to show off their own abilities, what better time to do it than with the support of your ladies right there?

Sing your heart out

If you love singing cheesy classics but aren’t quite ready to unleash your talent on the world, perhaps a karaoke party in a private booth with only your girl mates present is a better idea than open mic.

Most cities have karaoke bars with rooms that can be hired on an hourly basis. Here you can work your way through the song menu safe in the knowledge that you’ll only be embarrassing yourself in front of friends – unless someone sneakily posts a video to Facebook, that is!

Long Term Travel

Long-term traveling on the cheap can be difficult. It requires a degree of dedication to the mindset that you will at all times maximize the bang for your buck, and make decisions based on the best ways of managing your funds. All too often, it’s easy to seek out comforts and luxuries that give short-term satisfaction but cut into your budget for later. While we’re all for enjoying everything and not being afraid to shell out a little cash for once-in-a-lifetime unique experiences, here are some of our top tips for the traveler that wants to live a little more frugally:

 john ward alone in Sudan

1. Live like a local
The cost of living in many parts of the world is only a fraction of what we pay every day in the West. Adopting local habits such as eating street food, walking or biking rather than taking taxis, riding public buses and lower-class trains for long-distance travel, and so on are easy ways to save money. They also allow you to see things from an entirely different perspective. Stop being a tourist holding a camera trying to capture the way locals live, and experience a little bit of it firsthand instead.

2. Fly smart
While air travel is much cheaper than it once was, for most it’s still the largest expense on a trip by far. Start looking at fares as far in advance as possible so that you’re on top of their fluctuations and trends. Using (but not relying on) flight aggregator sites like SkyScanner will give you an idea of some of the top airlines’ prices, but many companies opt out of these searches and force you to go through their websites individually. The best deals are generally found about two months before an international flight, though exceptions of course exist.

3. Save on accommodation
After the flight, finding a place to sleep at night is generally the most expensive component of long-term travel. Cheap hostels and family-run guesthouses are a great start, and will give you an insight into both the backpacker scene and the hospitality of locals that have opened tourism-related businesses. However, you can make your travel money go further by taking advantages of services like Couchsurfing or AirBnB. Once again, in addition to saving a sizeable portion of your budget, you’ll also get to have many genuine human interactions with locals that transcend the normal superficial level that most backpackers interact at.

4. Use your resources
While blazing your own trail offers potentially unlimited freedom, utilizing the research of others that have come before is a great way to learn what things should cost (especially in areas where locals are known for taking financial advantage of foreigners that don’t understand exchange rates or the cost of living), where the best deals are to be found, and how to efficiently go from place to place. Whether you get your information from a guide book, a website, or the advice of a personal friend, you’ll always save money if you go into the trip better prepared.

Good luck!

Sunset to Sunrise: Comfortable and Cute Shoes that Take You There

When you’re traveling, you want to make the most of your time away from home, which can often lead to late nights dining, drinking and dancing. To make sure your feet can keep up, you’re going to need to pack some sturdy and comfortable shoes that can track serious miles while staying stylish. The euphemism, “no pain no gain,” does not have to apply to the shoes you wear. There are plenty of supportive styles that are still sexy and will complement your evening attire. Whether clubbing, on a date with a handsome foreigner or bar crawling, you won’t have to sacrifice style for comfort with these brands.

Australia's Famous Ugg Boots

Australia’s Famous Ugg Boots

Cathy Jean

Cathy Jean is a favorite of retail workers for a reason. This affordable shoe brand offers supportive padding in many of its styles (great for long hours on your feet). Whether wearing their flat sandals or sky-high pumps, you will immediately notice the difference the added cushion provides. The retail chain currently has over forty stores in the United States, but orders can also be placed online. If you can’t shop in person, call or email their customer service inquiring about a specific shoe’s lining—or choose from one of the three comfortable styles below:

Flat: If you prefer a flat shoe, go with the Gladiator Flat Sandal. Gladiator sandals are easier to wear than thong styles, which can begin to cause discomfort around your toes and heels. Choose from black, brown or natural colored faux leather.

Moderate: In general, wedges are more comfortable than heels because they give added support to your arch. The Knotted Vamp Slide offers a subtle 3-inch wedge, which is easy to walk in and cute for a casual evening out on the town. A Cathy Jean classic, the Knotted Vamp Slide is available in black, white, brown, or tan leather.

High: Adventurous ladies should look to a wedge with an added platform, which is the perfect way to get some extra height without going over the top. The Leather Wedge Sandal has a fashionable T-style strap and just the right amount of height. This wedge sandal comes in black or tan leather, and will be the perfect complement to your late night look.

UGG and Taos

UGG Australia gained popularity because of their furry, warm boots, but the brand certainly has more to offer. UGG has stylish but comfortable flats, wedges and sandals to fit every occasion. Taos footwear also is a great choice for ladies on the go. Inspired by natural beauty and rich fabrics, Taos footwear is often embellished with earthy stones, playful embroidery, and intricate stitching. Shop in stores or online and find a wide array of styles, updated each season, that will be a lifesaver throughout your travels.

Flat: Ballet slippers, or flats, are a simple and comfortable shoe choice that is still chic and fashionable. Already an easy walking shoe, the UGG Indah delivers a handcrafted-meets-cosmopolitan style with a cushioned footbed to keep you dancing all night long. Stick with black, or a neutral hue to get you maximum wear by coordinating with the majority of your outfit choices.  You can find this unique, sweetly chic shoe at Footwear etc.

Moderate: The Taos Angel is a playful and versatile shoe that can be paired with skinny jeans, skirts or dresses. Fans of the 1 ½ inch heel rave about how easy the shoe is to walk in and how it feels similar to flats, despite the moderate heel, Sweet but bold, this style is currently offered in metallic pewter or gold leathers.

High: Although the number of high-heeled styles can seem limited, the range of colors is not. A wedge can occasionally be added to the mix, but usually you will have three styles to choose from: a classic pump, an open-toe pump, and a pointy pump. If you are traveling in the summer and want to splurge on a bright-colored pair, go ahead, but if suitcase space is an issue, stick with a neutral color you will get more use out of. Stay stylish but comfortable with the  Taos Women’s Carousel, which now comes in taupe, graphite, or burnt orange leather.
